“Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence. I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD” –Psalm 27:13-14.
“Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD,” a verse that has always been underlined in my Bible. It has been one of my favorite verses in the Bible because “wait” seems to be an answer God so often gives me and something that I always need to be reminded to do. I however, never took the time to think about what prefaced this verse; I always knew I needed to wait, but never knew what I was supposed to wait for. And in walks verse 13. This verse puts verse 14 into perspective. I often lose heart and lose it quite fast, especially when things are difficult. I shouldn’t though, because there is hope; God is good, what more should we desire than to see His goodness? This goodness can also be defined as beauty; so in other words we must wait for God to reveal His beauty to us. Verse 13 promises that we will experience His goodness or profound beauty in this lifetime, on this earth. However, as verse 14 points out, we must wait on the LORD and be careful not to lose heart, and instead to be of good courage. Courage takes work, especially when it is easier to give up and lose heart. Yet, God promises that if we wait on Him, instead of losing heart, He will strengthen it and reveal His goodness and beauty to us.
These verses go right along with my last week’s theme verse of Isaiah 45:18, which says, “For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who established it, [and now my favorite part of this verse!] Who did not create in vain, who formed it to be inhabited: ‘I am the LORD, and there is no other’” (emphasis added). I love that this verse says that God did not create in vain. What purpose that gives us! What hope that provides! What goodness He can reveal to us if we truly believe that He did not create in vain!
I hope that this inspires you today as it did me. Remember that you are made with and for a purpose. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). God has taken His time to sculpt you and precious are His thoughts towards you (139:13, 15-17), for He did not create in vain.
Do not lose heart, but believe that God will show you His goodness in the land of the living, which is on this earth and in this lifetime. Don’t let doubt creep into your heart, but allow your courage to over come it, and He will strengthen your heart. Just wait on the LORD.
